24 March 2020

The Kuwaiti security authorities have referred five people on an urgent trial for violating the curfew imposed in Kuwait aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus. So far Kuwait has recorded a total of 191 cases of Covid-19.

On further investigations with the five, it was found that three Kuwaitis, a foreign resident, and a Gulf national had deliberately violated the curfew that got effective on Sunday. As per the government, in case of violation of the curfew, three years of imprisonment and a fine of KD10,000 is likely for violators.

Authorities meanwhile released 15 people suspected of having violated the curfew, after initial investigations showed that they acted due to emergency reasons, the report said. The curfew forms part of a series of stringent measures that Kuwait has put in place to curb the spread of the virus.

This include stopping flights with outside world, giving a holiday to all employees, extending closure of educational institutions till August, and shutting down of shopping malls.
