French Ambassador to Kuwait, Claire Le Flecher, revealed the embassy’s intention to create a Francophonie diwaniya in Kuwait to include the member states and French speakers in the country, pointing out that about a third of Kuwaitis speak French, reports Al-Qabas daily. This came during a press conference to announce the launch of the ‘Francophonie Month 2023’ initiative, which ends on the 20th of this month on the “International Day of Francophonie”.

The “Month of Francophonie” includes many cultural events such as competitions, concerts, bazaars, sporting events and a French-language film festival, which will be prepared by the French Embassy, the French Institute in Kuwait and the embassies of the OIF member countries.

Le Flecher considered the launch of the Francophonie month a great opportunity to remind that Kuwait is a country that loves French.

She emphasized, “The French language has been taught in Kuwait since 1966, and today we have more than 1,400 French teachers in Kuwait, and about 35,000 students, which makes it the third most spoken language in the country.”

For his part, the Tunisian Ambassador to the country, Al-Hashimi Ajili, indicated the interest of the Tunisian embassy in promoting the Francophonie in Kuwait, praising the efforts of the Francophonie Council.

Ajili pointed out that there are “about 500,000 Kuwaitis who master the French language, which is a good indicator, and we are ready to support them.”
